Huish Farm is a 1300 acre
fully operational share
farming venture with
Clinton Devon Estates.
Our base at Huish farm, home to the 1300 acre share farming venture between Mark Stevens and Clinton Devon Estates is a fully operational farm complimenting the CropMech business.
CropMech are involved in many different agreements with farming land around in Devon. If you have land available, whether it's arable or grassland, then please get in touch to discuss your options.
Our Arable farming covers about 2000 acres, of which the following crops are grown:
• Feed Wheat
• Feed Barley
• Oats
• Maize
• Miscanthus (Energy Crop)
We use the maize, and oats as a break to our first wheats. We have a few second wheats this year for the first time.
Inputs are purchased as cheaply as possible, often as a group buy to get savings together.
All produce is weighed over our weighbridge to give us accurate costings and gross margins.
All machinery operations are carried out by our own equipment and operators, but other contractors are pulled in if we are busy and can't get to a job rather than mess up the timing of an operation.
The land is entered into the "entry level scheme".
We have 100 suckler cows at Huish, which are grazed predominantly on the parkland around the main farm. Most of these are Limo / Sim / Hereford Cows, but there is a small herd of Devon Cattle kept as a special interest to Lord Clinton. The calves are reared through to slaughter as steers and heifers. In addition to the suckler herd we buy calves at 100kg and rear them through to slaughter. Many of these are Angus and marketed through a premium Angus scheme. Total number of cattle on the farm is around 500. Most of these are sold through Dawn Meats at Hatherleigh to reduce the number of miles the animals have to travel on their final journey.
Wheat and Oat Straw – For Sale Ex. Farm at harvest time off the field or throughout the winter.
Wheat, Barley and Oats – Available rolled or whole. We have a good outlet of oats and also buy oats, segregate them and market them according to bushel weight and colour. All cereals bought by us must be farm assured and have a sticker on the weighbridge ticket.
Maize – We grow maize on contract for other farmers, predominantly dairy farmers who want to specialise in milk production and leave the arable cropping to someone else. This is supplied on forward contracts put in place before the crop is planted. Orders now being taken for Autumn 2020.
Silage – We have clamp silage and baled silage available during the winter, either collected or delivered.
